MENTORING AND SUPPORT

INCLUSION at BIS

At BIS, we believe that academic excellence depends not only on a diverse body of students, families, and faculty but, of equal importance, affirming and engaging the perspectives and backgrounds within our community. Our ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion work therefore aims for every child and adult to be heard. We are proud of our ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion.

A dedicated team of special educators and counsellors, work to create conducive and  personalised learning environment  for students with needs - be it academic or socio-emotional. Peer support groups and mentor groups add to this endeavour. We also have a BIS  parent support group where families with the same concerns meet, providing mutually needed information and emotional support.

We also acknowledge our need to continue our learning, to strengthen this commitment and our practices, every day. This statement therefore reflects not only who we are but also who we seek to become as a diverse, inclusive, and equitable school community.

PARENT SUPPORT GROUPS
The first meeting was on the theme  of “Let’s start talking” and the intent was to get parents of special needs students meet each other.  There was a clear  sense of community, understanding, a place to laugh about the same things, talk about problems, and help each other.

The second meeting was a panel discussion led Dr Vibha Krishnamurthy and Ms Shamin Malhotra of Ummeed with parents and students who have been champions in their journey, despite their challenges.

The experiences shared by parents and students were inspirational and let the audience overwhelmed and hopeful of a bright future for their children.

PEER MENTORING

Three students with special needs but champions in their achievements-

Advait Wadhwani, Niall Shah and Anant Parshotam of Year 11 have on their own initiative started a Peer Mentoring Group for their juniors who have special needs. They are supported by our advisor Ms Mitali Dey and have been helping students across grades 6-10 with academic needs.

They have been spending time in their free blocks, before and after school, guiding younger students, gently goading and providing the support needed to fulfill academic demands.

We at SRC have been very impressed and appreciative of their efforts, and the younger ones have been most happy and enjoy the attention they get from their seniors.

PEER SUPPORT GROUP

The Peer Support Group (PSG) for the year 2020-2021 has been formed predominantly for the IBDP students but our long term goal is to include working with students from years 9 and 10 as we make progress with the training of these peer supporters. 5 students volunteered to be a part of the PSG and underwent an intensive training programme aimed to equip them with skills needed to fulfill the role of a peer supporter. The PSG will be an alternative approachable body available for students to speak with and will form a support structure for students in need of emotional support. The PSG will also work towards a handful of awareness-based discussions on common issues within the community.

PSG members for the IBDP section for 2020 - 2021 are:

  1. Aamyneh Mecklai

  2. Aarushi Shah

  3. Jaya Moorjani

  4. Karthik Srinivasan

  5. Karun Krishnamurthy
